Kickin' it Old Skool

As I mentioned, Macau used to be a Portuguese colony, so there is a mix of cultures there. It is a blend of Latin, European and Chinese cultures. It seems that Macau has done a better job of retaining some of the old colonial flavor than Hong Kong. The Latin culture is known for their plazas or squares, which is a fairly common theme in Chinese culture too. Maybe that's why there are pockets of Macau that still have a very Portuguese or colonial feel to them. The architecture is distinct and definitely not Chinese. So let's take a peek at what's on the other side...

Senado Square is easily recognized by its trademark wavy mosaic, pastel buildings, arches and columns.

Me on a side street that looks like it was transplanted directly from Europe.

Weaving our way to St. Dominic's Church.

St. Dominic's dates back to the early 1600s and was renovated in 1997.

The inside of the church was very decorative, filled with Roman Catholic icons. There were quite a few statues of Mary holding an infant Jesus.

Next will take a look at what is probably Macau's most famous church... and believe me there are more than a few old churches there.
